Brazilian storm in attack mode
Brazil is known worldwide for its world and Olympic titles in football, volleyball, and sailing. The nickname « Brazilian Storm » comes from its recent successes and top results in the Star Sailors League with Robert Scheidt, Bruno Prada, and Jorge Zarif. The « Brasucas, » as they are known, have a history of sailing victories in major offshore and coastal races. With 18 Olympic medals and world titles in various classes, Brazilian sailors competing in the events are consistently among the top performers, and they will also make their mark at the inaugural SSL Gold Cup in 2023, when the Brazil Storm will sail together on the same 47-foot longboat.
Brazil invests annually in youth sailing. Not only does it boast 7,367 km of coastline, but it also has a European heritage in clubs and a lineage of famous families competing in the sport, the most famous being the Graels. Every January, more than 300 boats compete in the Optimist Championship. Brazilians are also well-versed in hosting sailing events, such as the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, world-class events like Star and Snipe, 11 stops of The Ocean Race, the finishes of the Transat Jacques Vabre, and the traditional Sailing Week in Ilhabela.
